Manchester United are plotting a move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani. According to recent reports, Manchester United are set to battle it out with Premier League rivals Arsenal for the defender’s services. It is being reported that both clubs are lining up a big-money move in the region of £35.4m to bring the Italian international into the top tier of English football.
The 23-year-old has failed to secure his place in the Juventus first-team this season. The Red Devils are ready to take advantage of his situation by offering him an escape route into Old Trafford next month.
After the departure of Leonardo Bonucci to AC Milan, it was expected that the centre-back would be able to step up to the challenge of playing football regularly for the Italians but he has been kept out of the Juventus starting lineup by Mehdi Benatia who has put in some impressive displays for the Serie A side of late.
Rugani’s current employers are reportedly not interested in parting ways with their prized asset, but a potential big offer in the near future should be enough to convince the Italian giants. Some sources are suggesting that an offer in the region of £35.4m (€40m) will be enough to secure the ex Empoli star’s signature.
Manchester United currently boast the joint best defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded just 12 goals in 18 league matches. However, they are a bit short in centre-back positions with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones being regularly used due to their impressive form this season but the likes of Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelöf has been injury prone and far too inconsistent. The addition of Rugani will add some fresh life to this United defence with Jose Mourinho finally identifying the centre-back position that needs addressing.
The Italian defender has made 13 appearances for Juventus in this campaign and has scored and assisted once each. He has represented Italy at every youth category from the Under 16 level onwards. Rugani has also earned 4 international caps for the Italian national team. The 23-year-old has a wealth of experience in Italian football and would definitely help United in their quest for winning top honours in the coming seasons if given the chance at Old Trafford.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United can fend off strong competition from Arsenal in pursuit of the defender’s services.
