Aston Villa are plotting a move for Burnley forward Nahki Wells when the transfer window reopens next month. Some sources are claiming that the Villains are interested in the forward, who moved to the Clarets for £5m last summer. He has recently fallen down the pecking order and is now set to depart on a possible loan deal in January. Steve Bruce’s men are looking to sign at least one forward next month after they lost Jonathan Kodjia for the rest of the campaign due to injury with Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa also on their radar.
Wells arrived from Huddersfield Town in the summer but has failed to feature for Burnley this season due to an ankle injury which has kept him out since the end of the last campaign. In an interview last month, Wells disclosed:
“I obviously had a lot of optimism the return would have been sooner but, at the same time, this is the Premier League and I’m coming to a level I’m unfamiliar with,”
“I was never going to jump in and just come off the bench after training for three days and score a hat-trick.
“It was never going to be a fairy tale like that. It’s always difficult to take a step up.
Wells has earned 9 international caps for Bermuda and has scored 5 goals for his country. He came into prominence after making a breakthrough at Bradford City where he has scored 57 goals and made 12 assists in 115 appearances for the Bantams. He then went on to join Huddersfield Town in the Championship where he made 153 appearances and found the back of the net 49 times and provided 13 assists for the Terriers.
The 27-year-old forward has bags of experience in the Championship and would be an ideal fit for the Villains who are currently in fifth place in the Championship standings. Steve Bruce knows that it would be a difficult task to secure promotion into the Premier League and need an out and out goalscorer who can help the West Midlands outfit in their quest to finish in one of the playoff positions. Villa has struggled to score enough goals in the Championship this season, netting only 29 times in 22 matches. They need to score more in order to make a push up the table and the possible arrival of Wells might be the solution to some of their goal-scoring issues.
It remains to be seen whether Steve Bruce is successful in his attempts to sign the Burnley striker.
