Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on strengthening his options in midfield in the January transfer window. And according to reports, the former Chelsea boss has targeted Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
With Marouane Fellaini soon to be out of contract while Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s future with the Red Devils being filled with uncertainty, the Premier League giants could well use the services of a fresh midfielder over the winter transfer window.
Spanish outlet Don Balon, claims that Manchester United are confident that a bid of £27m would be enough to tempt Real into selling one of their highly rated footballing talents.
On the flip side, a move away from the Bernabeu could be a logical solution for Mateo Kovacic as the Croatian midfielders has been largely ignored by Zidane, due to the presence of world-class midfielders in Toni Kroos, Casemiro and his fellow compatriot, Luka Modric.
Prior to his switch to the Spanish capital in 2015, the Croatian was regarded as one of the hottest prospects in European football. Since then, however, the 23-year-old has had a tough time, making an impression on the Bernabeu.
A move to Manchester United could make sense for both the player and the club, as the Red Devils can offer the Croatian International the vital game-time he’s currently seeking, especially with the World Cup looming around the corner.
Manchester United, too, will be hugely benefitted by the move. The PL giants have suffered this season, due to their lack of creative midfielders and of course, frequent injuries to key players.
Kovacic will not only bring depth into their midfield department but also provide some top-notch creativity in the attacking third. He could even prove to be an upgrade to Ander Herrera, whose future with the Manchester giants, is also in doubt, of late.
The 23-year-old has the temperament and the quality to thrive in the Premier League. He has more than enough quality to establish himself as a regular first teamer for Manchester United and once again establish himself as one of the most exciting midfielders in European football. Although that may sound a little too far-fetched, his addition to Manchester United will no doubt aid Jose Mourinho’s side, who are desperately seeking a quality midfielder in the transfer market.
