Manchester United are a club planning for the future as Jose Mourinho, the current manager, has built a squad with a core of young talent. The first team is full of exciting stars but the Red Devils also have a number of future stars at their academy and one player they have high hopes for his 17year old Angel Gomes.
A part of the FIFA U17 World Cup winning side from England, Gomes is one of the most exciting playmakers in the domestic circuit in England and is only getting better, playing for United’s youth squad. He has three goals and an assist in just five games for the U18s, and is starting to push for a place in the senior side.
As a testament to his progress, the Red Devils have now decided to tie him down to a new deal. Earlier this week, Manchester United announced on their official website that Gomes has signed his first professional deal with the club.
“Manchester United has always been a big part of my life. I have been with the club since the age of six and it was a proud moment for me when I made my first team debut.,” Gomes said after signing his new deal.
He made his top-flight debut for United in the game against Crystal Palace on the last match-day of the previous season but has not been able to break into the first team this season, even in the cup games. But at just 17, the Old Trafford academy product is easily a star in the making.
Known for his movement in and around the penalty box in the final third, the 17-year old is an excellent dribbler, with decent pace to burn. However, his vision and accuracy in passing is what makes him a dangerous player. At such a tender age, Gomes has already picked up the nag of breaking defences with just a single pass and is adept at creating clear-cut chances on a consistent basis.
He has to work on his finishing, playing as an attacking midfielder but is key pass and chances created stats are right up there with the best players in Europe in his position.
He has to work on his physical aspect of the game, if he wants to be a hit in the Premier League but his composure and the smart head on his shoulder will allow him to grow into a more effective and consistent player.
The Red Devils have the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata as the only players who can play that role alongside Paul Pogba, who can be used there. Gomes is not a player who can replace them in the first team yet but if Mourinho is desperate and wants fresh faces, the 17-year old is already ready for first-team action.
So tying him down to his first contract, giving him no chance to leave the club anytime soon, could be a huge coup for the Red Devils.
