Reports have emerged that Newcastle United will be reigniting their pursuit of Scottish midfielder, Tom Cairney in the January transfer window. Their previous bid of £20m had been rejected in January of 2017. The Scotsman had even killed all the transfer rumours by signing a contract extension with Fulham which ties him to the club until 2021.
Rafael Benitez is keen on signing new players to the club in order to solidify their presence in the Premier League. They are currently sitting in the 15th spot just 5 points clear off the relegation spots. A taxing December schedule against the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Manchester City might hurt their ambitions and force them to invest heavily to face the second half of the season.
After spending one season in the EFL Championship, Newcastle are well aware of the challenges they will be facing in top-flight English football. With only 14 goals to their name, the Magpies are looking to add more attacking firepower to the current squad. Current winger Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie are yet to find the back of the net with Christian Atsu sidelined over a thigh tear before their clash against Newcastle on the weekend.
Cairney however, has turned down rumours of a possible transfer away from Fulham. He has stated that he is currently very happy to play for the Cottagers and would like to continue to do so for the remainder of the season.
He has expressed his delight over the transfer rumours surrounding. He considers them to be high praises to his name, especially coming from a Premier League side like Newcastle.
The 26-year-old has appeared in 104 matches for Fulham and netted the ball 22 times along with 18 assists. He even made his international debut against Canada on 22 March 2017 and has stated his willingness to cement his position for the Tartan Army.
Cairney’s current campaign has been a bit shaky with only one goal to his name and the Lillywhites currently in the 15th spot of the Championship. But even then it can be concluded that he will have a greater impact on Fulham who are currently chasing Premier League promotion themselves,
He was one of the key components in the previous season which saw the Cottagers fight their way to the semi-final of the playoffs. They were the chosen favourites to lead the Championship table this season but has failed to live up to those expectations.
Fulham will be pleased to hear about the Scotsman’s commitments as he will be an integral part of the side’s future ambitions.
