In one of his latest interviews, Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, stated that they rejected a bid ‘from a nearby Championship club’ in the summer for Leeds United’s potential target, George Hirst. The youngster is one of the brightest young talents that Championship has on offer and is rated very highly by the football fraternity as he has developed in a very convincing manner so far in his career.
Son of Wednesday’s legendary striker David Hirst, George has attracted a lot of interest from many quality sides of the Premier League, including Everton and Leicester City. Further, two other clubs in the shapes of Fleetwood Town and Mansfield Town were also keen to secure his services on loan in the summer. The Star has reported that Leeds United also saw their bid turned down by the Owls to lure Hirst to the Elland Road.
Under the tutelage of Thomas Christiansen, Leeds United have not been very convincing so far in the English second division as they have mustered 30 points from 20 encounters so far and are placed at the 8th spot in the league chart. United’s owner, Andrea Radrizzani, had stated back in January that he is desirous to invest in local talents and a starlet like Hirst could be a good buy for the club.
The 18-year-old emerged through the youth ranks of Wednesday and scored 40 goals in aggregate for his club and England national team’s youth side. He is a classic no. 9 and during his exploits with the youth sides, he showed that he has the potential to be a fox in the box. He is sharp, mobile and possesses sheer predatory instincts up front.
His height gives him an advantage in the air and he leaves no stone unturned to get the most out of the chances he receives. Besides, he also brings his teammates into the equation, holds the ball well in the final third and shoots the ball fiercely and ticks a lot of boxes of being a young striker worth having in a team’s ranks.
Talks of his contract extension have failed despite the best efforts of Sheffield Wednesday and he is seemingly likely to be leaving Hillsborough sooner rather than later. Although he is young and doesn’t have much experience under his belt, he has shown notable maturity and calmness and the Peacocks should try to launch a bid in order to make him sign on the dotted line.
