Fiorentina have made a shocking approach for Chelsea defender Abdul Rahman Baba, as per reports from Calcio Mercato. The Italian giants are seemingly interested in the services of the former Augsburg defender, as they attempt to sign him up in the January transfer window.
The story of Chelsea youngster Abdul Rahman Baba has been a rather disappointing one so far. The Ghanian arrived at Stamford Bridge with a lot of promise. The £22 million transfer Abdul Rahman Baba, in the summer of 2015, signalled a lot of hype across the African continent only to flop big time, in the English top division.
Since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2015, the youngster has featured in only 15 Premier League games, failing to make an impression in most of those outings. However, can Chelsea afford to let him leave in the January transfer window?
While there’s no doubt over the fact that Abdul Rahman Baba has been one of the biggest transfer flops for Chelsea in the past couple of years, Baba did show some promise whilst playing in the Bundesliga.
Last summer, the Blues agreed to a loan deal for Baba to Bundesliga club Schalke. The Ghanian International played in 21 competitive games for the Royal Blues before suffering a horrific injury in December which ruled him out for the rest of the season.
His performances in the Bundesliga were fairly decent as he competently fought for a place in the starting lineup against the likes of Sead Kolasinac, Dennis Aogo, and Junior Caicara. The 23-year-old has shown incredible talent, in the past, especially at Augsburg, where his marauding runs created a lot of problems for their Bundesliga oppositions.
It might seem like a blow for Chelsea if they are to lose the services of Abdul Rahman Baba. While the Ghanian may not be in the thick of actions, of late, the former Augsburg defender can provide necessary backup in the defensive department.
That being said, however, the Blues should instead plot another loan move for their Ghanian defensive gem. Last season, a loan move back to the Bundesliga really helped the development of the 23-year-old and had it not been for the horrific injury, Baba might have once again prevailed as one of the most impressive fullbacks for Schalke.
Fiorentina could be the perfect club for Abdul Rahman Baba to further hone his skills and possibly ready himself for some Premier League action, should he manages to churn out a successful stint with the Violas.
