Manchester City are keen on recruiting Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, Frenkie De Jong. The 20-year-old year has broken into the Ajax first-team and impressed with his performances this season. The youngster has generated a lot of interest from the Premier League. TalkSPORT are reporting that Chelsea and Arsenal have also joined Manchester City in the hunt for the Dutch wonderkid. He is now set for a big money move out of Netherlands with the race for his signature just starting to heat up.
Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich, Hamburg and RB Leipzig are also reportedly tracking the midfielder with Ajax set to offer him a new contract. His current deal expires in June 2019 and the Dutch club are now trying to convince him to put pen to paper on a new deal that will extend his stay until the summer of 2022.
Earlier this month, a recent report in The Sun claimed that Arsenal and Manchester City have both made contact with Ajax in relation to the availability of Frenkie De Jong in the January transfer window. The clubs believe that they can persuade the Dutch giants to part ways with their prized asset for a bargain price of £5m as the midfielder just has 18 months remaining on his current contract. It is expected that Ajax will hold out for a greater fee due to the 20-year-old’s rapid emergence in world football over the past year.
Frenkie De Jong began his career at Willem II before making a move to Ajax’s youth team in the second tier of Dutch football. During his spell in the club’s youth team, the midfielder won the Talent of the Season award in the second division. The midfielder announced himself to the world when he came on against Manchester United in the Europa League final. Both Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola think that the Dutch prospect can boost their respective squads going into the second half of the campaign.
The Dutch midfielder has made a total of 13 appearances for Ajax this season. He has scored one goal and made 7 assists. Pep Guardiola can boast the likes of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho in his team’s current midfield. Even if they can fend off the rest of competition and sign up De Jong, it’s difficult to see how he can break into the Blues’ first-team this season.
However, he would a great signing in the long run. With Yaya Toure and David Silva both in the wrong side of 30, De Jong would be a welcome addition to the squad. Pep Guardiola is one of the best managers who can nurture the youngster and develop him into a world-class talent.
