Everton are a club in a very abysmal and sorry state and of late, their sporadic run of form has brought a lot of calumny upon them. Having started the season in one of the most unconvincing fashions under the stewardship of Ronald Koeman, the board sacked the Dutchman for obvious reasons and the club stands bereft of confidence at this stroke of the hour. Farhad Moshiri wants to make an appointment pretty soon in order to ensure that the club goes in the right direction from here.
They did manoeuvre a productive summer transfer window and bagged some notable players like Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Michael Keane, but as a unit, the Toffees haven’t been able to produce anything spectacular and have been withering more often than not.
They are placed at the 16th spot in the Premier League table after their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend with 12 points to their name from 12 games. They face Southampton next away from home and it would undoubtedly be a tricky fixture.
David Unsworth is currently the caretaker manager of the club but owing to their 1-5 defeat at the hands of Atalanta at the Goodison Park in the Europa League, Everton are now not only out of the aforesaid competition but have also been humiliated to a great extent. This sort of insipid and uninspiring performance is not acceptable by a club of their stature and no wonder why they are desperately attempting to sign a new manager.
As per one of the latest reports by the Independent, Republic of Ireland’s gaffer, Martin O’Neill, is perceived to be the frontrunner to clinch the manager’s throne at the Goodison Park. O’Neill hasn’t given his consent to remain in charge of Ireland for Euro 2020 and has thus been installed as the favourite to be the heir to Koeman by a large number of betting companies. With Marco Silva now out of contention, O’Neill could be a decent choice for Everton.
O’Neill is a manager with truckloads of experience of English football under his belt, having managed the likes of Sunderland, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Leicester City.
His future as the boss of the Republic of Ireland is in doubt as he is desirous of taking some time to plan about his future after Ireland were beaten by Denmark in their World Cup play-off earlier this month and managing a big club like Everton should be a tempting option for him.
