It is one of those rare days in modern football when money has failed to crumble the intention and passion of the professional. Everton’s desperate chase for Marco Silva has reportedly come to an end after the Watford boss showed no intention of resigning from his Hornets job.
Since the departure of Ronaldo Koeman a month ago, the club has been playing under the stewardship of caretaker manager David Unsworth. It is now also being reported that Everton are considering RB Leipzig’s sporting director, Ralf Rangnick for the managerial post.
The summer came for Everton with a lot of excitement and activity floating around the Merseyside club. The bad news was taken care of first when it was confirmed that Romelu Lukaku would be leaving the club. However, the toffees did manage to pull out a startling amount out of Manchester United for the Belgian hitman.
As Lukaku packed his bags, it seemed like Everton were the desperate parents trying to make their children happy by buying in an endless line of toys without much prior thought. A barrage of new signings came in, all under the guidance of Ronald Koeman and Everton ended up spending a startling £142.38 million. They were the fourth highest spenders in the market ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and most importantly for them, Liverpool.
The power of the money did its bit and brought in the talent to the club. However, there was no harmonical harnessing of the new power and talent available at the club and Everton’s plans have crumbled like a house of cards. Not even the return of their favourite boyhood star Wayne Rooney could spare the club any blushes, as they crashed to relentless defeats one after the other.
In this situation, with Koeman sacked and Marco Silva effectively out of the running, Everton has turned their eyes to Ralf Rangnick, a man who had previously applied and failed to land the managerial hot seat at Everton.
He is now well established across Europe and at the age of 58, has a collectable experience that can be seen from the excellent work he has done at Leipzig. He is considered as a very popular figure across Europe and had previously been linked with the England national team job post the Three Lions’ disastrous performance at the Euro 2016.
It now remains to be seen if he chooses to come to a struggling club like Everton and if he does, whether he can make much of a difference to a team whose players appear to have given up any hope of breaking into the top six as they were expected to when the season started.
