Newcastle United’s decent start to the season faced some difficulties as the Magpies haven’t won any of the last three matches. Despite a relatively quiet summer transfer window, Rafa Benitez led the club to a convincing start and things were looking pretty good at the St James Park.
But as of now, Newcastle are going through a rough patch and to put an end to the current situation, Benitez is likely to seek the help of the winter transfer window. If reports are to be believed, Benitez has stepped up his interest in Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun.
The Magpies have set their sights on the player as Benitez has gone impatient over the inactivity of his forward line in front of the goal. Neither of his strikers has been able to show the quality that he has been craving for so far.
New arrival Joselu has so far managed just two goals while Dwight Gayle’s injury problems continue to bother Benitez. Aleksandar Mitrovic has found himself on the fringe at St James Park and he could be eventually sold in the January transfer window to fund the move for Tosun if the Magpies are to make a move for him.
Tosun’s growing popularity has made him a viable prospect in the transfer market and Newcastle’s incapability to score goals have compelled them to go for a typical goal poacher like him in January.
Newcastle scouts were present in the stands at the Vodafone Park Stadium as Tosun displayed an all-around show to fire his side to the knockout stages of the Champions League. He laid down a delightful assist for Anderson Talisca against Porto as the Turkish giants topped the group stages following an emphatic display.
Newcastle are ready to pounce on the opportunity to bag the player and Besiktas president Fikret Orman has expressed his intention to open talks over a possible move for the Turkish international.
“Cenk Tosun is like a diamond, a part of our family. If the conditions are right for Besiktas and the player, we will speak as of that day… There is no official offer to me at the moment.”
Tosun’s agility and drive in the attacking third would be a good match for the Premier League as the English top tier has been one of the most competitive leagues in the European circuit.
With takeover talks hovering around the St James Park, Benitez would be boosted by a hefty transfer move if Mike Ashley manages to rub off his hands from the ownership of the Tyneside club.
