Another match, another goal for Harry Kane.
Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Germany ended with the English side battling to a 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund lead in the first half after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired them into the lead but a Harry Kane goal early in the second half pulled things back for Tottenham Hotspur.
Both teams tried to break the deadlock but failed to convert any chance into a goal until Son produced a world-class finish in the last quarter of the game.
As things stand, a 2-1 win will be enough to keep Tottenham Hotspur in the top position in the group table. It also means that the English side has won the group with a game to spare, an achievement worth noting because they did it by beating the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
The German side, on the other hand, further complicates matters for them to even qualify for the Europa League and their slump in form will be a worrying sign with Real Madrid scheduled to be their next European opponents.
As for Tottenham Hotspur, a morale-boosting victory is exactly what Spurs needed after their weekend defeat to Arsenal.
Here is a look at how the players performed tonight.
Hugo Lloris – 7.5/10
Not the most difficult night for the Frenchman in Europe’s premier competition as Dortmund failed to test him on a regular basis.
Serge Aurier – 7.5/10
A happy outing for the ex-Paris Saint German full-back as he found plenty of space on the right flank to attack.
Davidson Sanchez – 8/10
In what is turning out to be a dream signing for Pochettino, the 21-year-old put in another solid performance at the back.
Jan Vertonghen – 7.5/10
There is definitely no position and no formation Vertonghen cannot play in. The left-footed defender who has been used as a fullback, a wing back, a part of a 3 man back was seen as a part of a 2 man centre-back pairing today and he excelled in keeping the dangerous Aubameyang out for the most part of the night.
Danny Rose – 7/10
A long-awaited return for the Englishman. He is clearly still off his usual pace as he was unable to exploit the dangerous areas when he got the ball in the final third.
Eric Dier – 7.5/10
Another multi-faceted player, he was deployed in the midfield today to break Dortmund’s play and he did that effectively
Harry Winks – 7/10
Did his job as told by the coach, nothing fancy off the books, no mistakes by the disciplined Englishman either.
Son – 8.5/10
Restored to the starting line-up after a long time as he made it count with a solid finish
Dele Alli – 8/10
A brilliant run into the Dortmund box and then having the composure to look up and find the unmarked Son showed the true class of Alli.
Christian Eriksen – 7/10
A rather quiet game compared to the lofty standards created by him for Eriksen. His lack of creativity was reflected in Tottenham’s bluntness in the first half.
Harry Kane – 8.5/10
Harry Kane did what Harry Kane does, scored another goal.
Substitutes
Mousa Dembele – 6/10
Came on to shore things up and did that effectively
Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
Another player who came on to add weight and pace to keep Dortmund out did not get to see much of the ball.
Fernando Llorente – 5.5/10
Missed a golden chance when he was left one v one with the keeper that could have wrapped up the points for Spurs way earlier.
