The ongoing tussle regarding the Sunderland managerial position was finally solved as the former Wales manager Chris Coleman decided to take up the job at this crucial juncture.
Coleman’s appointment came as a surprising one as he left the much coveted Wales job to become a part of the Sunderland club management. Coleman was hugely successful as he led Wales to the semifinal in Euro 2016 where they conceded defeat at the hand of Portugal.
Coleman also survived a setback as Wales failed to earn the ticket of the next World Cup to be held in Russia, which could be one of the reasons behind his departure.
Sunderland are struggling at this moment and Coleman’s first job would be to calm the storm brewing at the moment. The gaffer has already started his contingency plan and he is eyeing a number of players in January in a bid to implement his strategy at the club.
According to reports, Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn has emerged as a potential contender to arrive at the Stadium Of Light in January. The teenager is well acquainted with the works of Coleman as the manager as Coleman is the one who provided Woodburn with his senior debut for the Wales side.
The 18-year-old is very highly rated at the club but hasn’t had his chances this season. He is the youngest scorer for Liverpool right now and the player is very well regarded by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Sunderland is unlikely to hand Coleman his desired budget, so a small term loan deal for the winger would do great for the Black Cats. It also would be good for his development so the Reds might allow him to leave in this January transfer window.
Sunderland’s struggle continued since the last season as they were demoted to the Championship following their miserable display in the top tier. Supporters had hoped things would take a positive turn after a change of mantle as Simon Grayson was handed the responsibility to steer the side but they failed to deal with the challenges of the second tier and are now languishing at the bottom of the league table.
Coleman knows he has a mountain to climb and would try to stick to the basics. Another Liverpool starlet Danny Ward is also being eyed, as Coleman wants to add fresh legs to the squad. The ex-Fulham manager is expected to make a mark following his blazing stint with Wales and it remains to be seen how he opts to use Woodburn if the teenager does arrive at the Stadium Of Light.
