As expected, West Bromwich Albion have sacked manager Tony Pulis. The 59-year-old had been in the firing line for an underwhelming start to the season and this decision became quite inevitable following their 4-0 drubbing at the hand of Chelsea.
The move came as a reminiscent of the recent trend, as Premier League clubs have already been on a manager sacking mode and Pulis is the latest casualty. Assistant Head Coach Gary Megson will take over the role and will be the interim manager until the club appoints a new manager to oversee the function of the club.
Pulis left the club in a stuttering position, as there is the gap of only a single point between them and the relegation zone. Pulis’ departure had been pretty imminent and the 4-0 loss against Chelsea was supposedly the last nail in the coffin.
West Brom Chairman John Williams said, “These decisions are never taken lightly but always in the interests of the Club.
“We are in a results business and over the back end of last season and this season to date, ours have been very disappointing.
“We would like to place on record our appreciation of Tony’s contribution and hard work during a period of transition for the Club which included a change of ownership. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”
Last season was Pulis’ best campaign at the club so far. The gaffer was successful in establishing a particular brand of football which helped them in finishing 10th. Their approach to the game, particularly their defensive performance, was heavily applauded.
But this season it turned out to be a disaster. The scathing attack on the manager from the Baggies supporters had been on for a while, as they were exhausted after watching their team struggle. Their boring defensive football was supposed to be the bedrock of their success but it became so redundant that Baggies looked clueless at times.
Derek McInnes’ name has been hovering around, as the Aberdeen boss has emerged as one of the favourites to replace the former Stoke City boss at the Hawthorns.
