The recent emergence of Marcus Tavernier has caught the eyes of a number of Premier League scouts, most notably from Everton and Arsenal. The 18-year-old recently got the opportunity to represent England at the U-19 level and has excited a lot of scouts with his impressive performances against Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Bulgaria during the international break.
The English teenager has forced his way into Garry Monk’s squad recently and has scored the winner in the derby-game against Sunderland, which helped Boro move into the Championship play-off spots. His other two Championship appearances have also resulted in Middlesbrough victories.
The Boro wonder-kid also scored against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup and is under contract that runs out next summer. Both Everton and Arsenal have shown in recent years that they are clubs that promote youth talent and have sent scouts to watch Tavernier in action.
With both Premier League clubs setting their sights on acquiring the English teenager’s services, they are now expected to make a bid in January. Some sources report that Bournemouth and Aston Villa are also interested.
The Daily Mail also reports that “Boro rate the young player highly and are expected to trigger the year-option on his deal soon.”
Marcus Tavernier has scored two goals in six first-team appearances for the Boro. He’s presently concentrating on retaining his place in the Middlesbrough first-team and can’t afford to have his head turned with the rumours of interests from clubs like Arsenal floating around.
The English teenager can play in a number of positions in the midfield, making him highly versatile and a worthy addition to any club.
Marcus Tavernier’s incredible rise to prominence has received praise from former Middlesbrough defender, Neil Maddison.
The 48-year-old Englishman stated that he was impressed by the start made by the teenager and hailed his performances as ‘outstanding’ and ‘superb’ for someone his age.
Speaking to the club website, he also said, “Tav’s fearless, he’s got something about him and you can see that Garry’s playing him because he trusts him. His job is to keep his shape defensively and he doesn’t panic, then you’ve also got the added bonus that he’s been scoring goals.”
Next up for Marcus Tavernier and Middlesbrough is a trip to Leeds United on Sunday. If the Middlesbrough midfielder can continue to keep up the same level of performance in the upcoming matches, then we can expect a few more clubs to join in on the race to secure his services.
