When Davy Klaassen arrived at the Goodison Park in summer, he was tipped to exceed all the expectations. On the back of a very successful season, Ronald Koeman was building a squad in a hope to challenge for a top-four spot.
Klaassen proved his credibility with some emphatic performances last season. The former captain of Ajax accumulated 20 goals and also racked up 12 assists for the Dutch giants in a season which was full of dazzling performances.
His exuberant display convinced the Toffees hierarchy to spend the money on him and Farhad Moshiri sanctioned a £25million move for the Dutch star. But since then things haven’t gone in either way as Klaassen’s form has been far from impressive and he hasn’t been able to help the club in a positive manner.
Everton’s main problem is that they have failed to gel as a unit and Koeman’s decision to induct a number of fresh faces haven’t gone down well in the current circumstances. There seemed to be no proper way of playing and everyone has been trying to do their own signature steps.
Bringing Klaassen to the Premier League was Koeman’s call and he has to take the blame on him. The Dutch midfielder has the guile and attributes to suit a more comfortable league where the game depends more on the pitch.
Premier League is one of the toughest and physically draining leagues and players here are well accustomed to the rough and rugged nature of the Premier League.
The Dutch international is new in the league and he needs time to get acclimatised to the condition. He has been asked to work on his physical aspect as it would help him in future if he wants to extend his stay in England.
Klaassen’s struggle hasn’t gone unnoticed and Fenerbahce have reportedly come to the rescue for him. The 24-year-old has found it difficult to make it to the starting lineup and he has been repeatedly ignored at the club.
But a player of his stature deserves a better treatment and the Toffees should be very patient with him. He has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League and if he can change a few attributes of his playing style he will become one of the better players for the Toffees.
Fenerbahce is ready for a swoop in January but the Toffees have a very gruesome season ahead of them and if they want to avoid relegation Klaassen needs to be used more extensively in the near future.
