Scottish Premiership outfit, Rangers, are currently undergoing a phase of transition. After a sluggish start to their season under the tutelage of Pedro Caixinha, the board sacked him last month. During the reign of the Portuguese, Rangers hardly showed signs of grit and passion and outcomes such as their unexpected early exit from the Europa League at the hands of Progres Niederkorn, losses against Celtic in all three Old Firm derbies during his stay and mediocre show in the league paved Caixinha’s exit route.
Right now, Rangers are placed at the 4th spot in the league chart with 24 points to their name after 12 games. Graeme Murty is currently discharging the role of interim manager as the board is still vouching for the next gaffer to navigate the club forward in the right direction.
Although the Light Blues chalked out a lot of signing during the summer transfer window, they are expected to take a dip in the pool of players in the upcoming transfer window in January.
As per one of the latest reports put forth by the Daily Record, Crystal Palace’s veteran midfielder, James McArthur, has been perceived to be one of the players whom Rangers could be targeting in January to beef up their arsenal.
It would make a lot of sense from the Glasgow-based club to make McArthur sign on the dotted line, for he is someone who has plenty of experience under his belt and has proven his mettle in arguably the toughest league in the world, i.e., the Premier League.
McArthur’s contract with the Eagles expires in the summer, which implies that other clubs can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with him or can even prise him out of the Selhurst Park by paying a nominal fee. The lifelong Rangers fan has been consistent for Crystal Palace ever since his move from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2014.
So far this season, the 30-year-old has played 7 games and has been a decent package in the middle of the park for them.
The Teddy Bears really need to close the gap between themselves and Celtic. To do so, they would not only need the likes of Graham Dorrans, Bruno Alves and Kenny Miller to step up but also inject more quality into their ranks.
McArthur still has some years of top-level football left in him and owing to the resilience and vision he showcases in the middle, he could be a splendid addition for Rangers.
