As history would suggest, it is not the easiest task for a young player to break into the first team at Real Madrid, let alone become a star player for the club. Hence, it was quite surprising and welcoming, as the world witnessed Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane give young Marco Asensio the opportunity to become a star at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Spaniard obliged and grabbed it with both hands and scored important goals and has become an important figure in the midfield for Real Madrid. He has broken into the Spanish national team as well and at the age of 21 looks set to develop into a world-class player for the future.
Marco Asensio has been in imperious form for club and country this season, for someone of his age. The young Spaniard, who came to the foray under the tutelage of Zinedine Zidane, has gone on to make a name for himself after scoring in the El Classico and starring for Spain in the national set-up during the last round of international matches.
Asensio is becoming a regular in the Real Madrid starting XI and will hope to go on, making it big for the Galacticos. Ideally, he is set for a long lengthy club career at Real but in football, you can never say never and especially with Real Madrid, who have a history of remorselessly offloading players.
Real Madrid let go of Alvaro Morata in the summer. The Galacticos now have Karim Benzema, who is on the wrong side of 30, an ageing Cristiano Ronaldo and a young Borja Mayoral as the only options to play up front. This has left Zidane looking for new players on top.
Moreover, even though Asensio is a promising player, Real have a host of midfielders in Isco, Modric, Kroos, Casemiro and Kovacic who can play through the centre. With such equations to balance, Zidane may just sanction the sale of Asensio to create a budget for a new striker or a winger.
As for the Red Devils, it would seem that Manchester United would be interested in bringing in the player. Jose Mourinho is looking to beef up his attacking options for a tough season ahead and Asensio can be a crucial addition to their side.
Manchester United have not been able to score regular goals, which has caused them to lose matches, including their last one against bitter rivals Chelsea in the Premier League. Mourinho will hope that signing Asensio will prove essential to bring them back to the winning way and challenge their City rivals for the title.
