Newcastle United are enjoying a decent start to their new English top-flight campaign. After a shaky first few weeks, they have fared well for a side returning to the Premier League this season and have slowly come back to their regular grind. They now stand eleventh on the table with fourteen points from eleven games. They have won five, drawn two and lost two of their last nine games all over. In a league where results after each match week can send a club relegation to top ten, Newcastle will still have to continue their fight if they wish to stay afloat this season.
On the transfer front, things have gone very wrong. A lack of a structured approach coupled with callous planning has seen Newcastle fail to register quality, new players in the summer. Rafael Benitez has made no secret of the fact that Newcastle United need new players. After a very impressive season in the Championships that saw Newcastle return to the Premier League, Benitez demanded more signings of Premier League standard to establish the club in England’s premier competition.
However, with Newcastle unable to sell their existing crop of players, Newcastle has had to deal with a stagnant squad and that has frustrated Benitez.
Come the January transfer window, Benitez has made it clear that he wants reinforcements. It is now being reported that Newcastle United are readying a move for Mallik Wilks. With a cringy club owner unwilling to spend much on the club, Benitez will have to spend the little money at his disposal wisely.
The 18-year old is an exciting prospect in the world of football. He has shown glimpses of good potential at his age and can become a star player in England. Wilks, who has currently been loaned out, is playing for Sky Bet League Two side Accrington Stanley and has enjoyed a bright start to the new season.
He has found the net thrice in fifteen appearances this season and has impressed many big clubs with his football. The man on loan, from Leeds United, will no doubt be humbled by his association with a top-flight club and will want to continue to impress if he desires to secure a move there anytime soon.
As for Newcastle, if they get the player, he will be a valuable addition to the squad for the future. The Newcastle faithful will, however, have to be patient and must not hope that an 18-year old who has been playing in League two to come to their club and hit the ground running, especially given the intensity of the league.
As for the club itself, while it is a good sign that the club is keeping an eye out for the future, maybe focusing on buying players who can help the club straightaway will be a better alternative.
