Following a great season in the Championship, Newcastle United was expected to maintain some of the same flair and form in the Premier League as well. They have somehow succeeded to some extent as they have maintained a steady progress in the top tier so far.
But consecutive losses in the last two matches have dealt a blow to their hopes and Rafa Benitez would be looking to keep things simple once the Premier League resumes following the end of the International break.
According to reports, the Magpies could revive their interest in long-term target Tom Cairney. Benitez failed to bring in a number of his desired players in the summer but in this upcoming transfer window, he could raid for his failed transfers.
Benitez’s frustration is no secret and the difference is clearly evident as the Magpies are looking a bit exhausted at this moment. Takeover talks have intensified in the last few days and the Mike Ashley reign probably will be coming to an end before 2018 kicks in.
Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners is said to be taken their vast interest in buying the club and there could be good news for Benitez very soon. The gaffer has a very estranged relationship with Ashley and the owner is unlikely to invest much in January should he remain in charge.
But if the takeover happens, the Toon could be boosted by a huge transfer kitty as a welcome bonus from the new owner. The Magpies had a number of bids including a mammoth £20m rejected as Fulham managed to successfully held on to their player in the summer.
But things have changed now as the Royals haven’t lived up to the expectation and it could be a great chance for Benitez to make amends. But he needs to quote a much bigger amount given Fulham’s strong position regarding his contract. The 26 year recently renewed his stay till 2021 and it would take an audacious approach from the Tyneside club to rope in the midfielder.
Newcastle have been lacking that creativity in the final third and Cairney’s arrival could be an answer for Benitez. The 26-year-old does have the guile and flair to provide the side with some much-needed thrust.
The Scottish international who only debuted for his national team this year is a product of the Leeds United academy but he could soon be seen donning the black and white stripes in near future.
