Reports are claiming that Chelsea are chasing Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi. The Argentine has been in impressive form and is currently being chased by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Icardi moved to Inter Milan back in the summer of 2013 from fellow Serie A side Sampdoria and has since gone on to become a star player at San Siro. He has a contract with the Italian giants that runs till 2021 and any party who might be interested in the Inter ace will have to fork out a fortune for the Argentine.
Icardi has gone on to make 158 appearances for the club and has scored 89 goals, adding a healthy 23 assists as well in the process. He is a mainstay at the club and being given the captain’s armband, it is clear Inter expect him to stay at the club for the long run. His recent heroics at the Milan derby where he scored a hattrick to sink Inter’s arch-rivals, has endeared him to the fans even more.
After Chelsea’s failure in the summer transfer window, the club is lacking a senior attacking player. The club would hope to appease Antonio Conte by bringing in quality reinforcements in the winter transfer window. Conte’s switch to a 3-5-2 formation this season has left Chelsea short of players in their attacking positions.
Chelsea currently have Pedro, Willian, Michy Batshuayi and young Charly Musonda as the attacking players besides Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard in the senior team. While Hazard is untouchable and Morata has been in great form in the team the same cannot be said for the rest of the four options.
Musonda is very clearly a backup option opted for by Conte due to lack of summer signings. The case for Batshuayi is interesting because despite scoring a healthy number of goals, Conte has been left unimpressed with the Belgian’s footballing style and clearly does not count on him as a reliable option up front.
The case for Pedro and Willian is that both players are highly inconsistent and have failed to produce enough quality on the pitch this season. While Pedro still fights and puts in an effort to make something happen, Willian simply overcomplicates matters for himself every time he gets the ball. The Brazilian does not release the ball soon enough and cannot be counted as a first team starter by any margin. Pedro despite his efforts is far away from adding the quality Chelsea need at the top.
This might prompt a move for Icardi by the west London club, where he is likely to become a part of a formidable front two alongside Morata with Hazard in behind. His move to Chelsea will bring in some much needed depth to the Pensioners.
