Despite his good form in the current season, Marouane Fellaini’s tenure at the old Trafford might come to an end. The Manchester United midfielder’s contract is due to expire at the end of this season and there haven’t been any concrete talks from both the parties as it stands.
The Belgian international was a deadline day signing during David Moyes’ reign but had never been the preferred choice at the club. He is always seen as a utility player but this season Jose Mourinho has entrusted him with a much bigger role.
The 29-year-old has also worked on a number of aspects of his game and is now a hugely improved player. Mourinho has made his intention clear to the club as he is very fond of the player.
But talks haven’t been positive, which means he will be free to sign a pre-contract with any club in January. A number of clubs including Besiktas have expressed their interest in the player and given the current situation, United could be forced to cash in on him in January rather than let him leave for free.
Let’s have a look at three replacements Mourinho might want to bring in if Fellaini leaves.
Yaya Toure
Manchester United might be looking for temporary options if Fellaini decides to leave the club and Yaya Toure could be a decent buy for the club. The Ivorian player was one of the top performers for Pep Guardiola’s side last season but this season he has been hardly used by the Spanish gaffer.
Toure’s control of the ball and his guile could be an interesting combination with the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic already in the team. He can play at a number of positions, which is a big plus point for the player.
Charlie Adam
Not the most consistent performer but he has the quality and the ability to add a new dimension to the gameplay. The Stoke City midfielder will be turning 32 this December and is on the periphery of his football career.
However, the player might bring stability to the Manchester United midfield, for a shorter period of time though, which they might miss on the departure of their Belgian ace.
Gareth Barry
It might be a big responsibility for the 36-year-old but given his ability and fitness, he could be the perfect heir to Fellaini. Barry has been playing in full force for the Baggies and shouldn’t have much problem in coping with the condition.
His experience could play a vital role and he can also play a mentor to the new recruits.
