Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho has finally had enough of David de Gea it seems. The highly-rated goalkeeper has been given a green light to join Real Madrid by the club but only, if they get Raphael Varane in exchange.
David de Gea has been one of the standout performers for United in the past few seasons. The Spaniard has evolved as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, thanks to his blistering performances week in week out. However, the 27-year-old has been a subject of some major transfer interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid. Los Blancos have been trying so hard to secure the services of David de Gea and it seems as if, head coach Jose Mourinho could finally allow the Spaniard to join Madrid next summer.
According to Diario Gol, the Madrid giants still have to pay a handsome fee as well as Raphael Varane in order to sign the highly rated goalkeeper next summer.
But can this prove to be a perfect piece of business on Man United’s part?
Even though Manchester United have been quite impressive defensively this season, conceding just five goals, which is even less than table toppers, Manchester City, the Red Devils do actually need some reinforcements in the defensive department.
United have relied a lot on the defensive partnership of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones this season whilst having no real defensive cover should any of them get injured. Besides, the fact that the Red Devils are starting to lose some steel about them, in recent games, following an impressive start to the season, further suggests the fact that they need a new face in the backline.
New signing Victor Lindelof has been awful, to say the least. The Swedish International has completely failed to make a mark at Old Trafford, and as perfectly capped off by The Guardian, “his duties extend no further than washing Mourinho’s car every morning”.
Chris Smalling, on the other hand, has always been one of the players under the microscope for Manchester United in recent seasons. Therefore, his future at the club is very insecure while Marcos Rojo has remained injured for quite a while now.
Raphael Varane could definitely add some steel to the backline for Man United. Not only does he have the quality to excel as a top quality Premier League defender, but the Frenchman also has the experience to go with it as well. He is a seasoned International with France and has won the Champions League twice with Real Madrid. He is pacy and also has the composure to act as an interior defender for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Made no mistake, Raphael Varane is surely one of the best defenders in the Spanish top flight. Securing his services could further solidify the already sturdy defence of Manchester United.
