Manchester United fell their second loss of their Premier League campaign this season when they were beaten by the reigning champions Chelsea in their own backyard at the weekend. Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the match and the Red Devils did not have enough firepower to answer back and get any points out of this clash
Jose Mourinho has been wary about his team composition in recent times, with quite a few key players being absent from the side due to injuries. However, one more thing that has been concerning him is the future of one of the main pillars of his squad, David De Gea.
If speculations are true, the Spanish custodian might be on his way out of the club by the end of the current season and his next destination might be the home of the Spanish champions Real Madrid, Santiago Bernabeu. The Galacticos have been interested in claiming United’s prized possession for quite some time now and were almost there, when they cracked the deal a couple of seasons ago, during the summer, but due to a technical glitch that kept them from doing so.
This time, however, the reigning European champions are determined to bag the player and this has put the Red Devils on high alert to find a suitable replacement for their Number 1 beneath the crossbars. There are a number of options but the Manchester club might prefer the talented Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is currently playing for the Serie A outfit AC Milan.
The 18-year-old has a long-term bond with his current club and has made his way into the senior squad quite quickly from the youth team.
However, that bond was on the verge of breaking when the club declared at the start of this season that the player might not sign a new contract with them and might be on his way out. Eventually, though, the player signed a new deal and kept his career with the Rossoneri alive.
Though Donnarumma’s new contract sees him stay at the San Siro till 2021, the Red Devils might look to make a swoop for the Italian goalkeeper in the near future. The player is known for his brilliant ball-handling skills and ability to keep a cool head even in the most adverse of situations, which will come handy if the Red Devils can get him to replace their Spanish shot-stopper.
De Gea is easily among the best in this role but can Donnarumma be the man to replace him at Old Trafford?
