To say luck hasn’t been on Everton’s side this season would be a grossly underwhelming statement. The Toffees had hoped for a change in fortunes after spending over £142m this summer window but Ronald Koeman’s former side has failed to address a single thing properly this season.
They went through a complete squad overhaul as a number of first team stars had been shown the door but they did bring some big names in a bid to upgrade themselves. They were supposed to be a top six contenders this season but Ronald Koeman’s inability to adapt to the current condition is perhaps the single biggest factor behind their failure. The Dutch gaffer introduced a number of players hurriedly to the starting lineup but the team as a whole never looked like a single unit.
He should have waited for the season to start properly and only then he could have identified the problems in a far better way. Top seven finish is now a dream for the Merseyside club and supporters would be hoping to survive the drop which could be a disastrous result for them.
Here is a list of our three players that Everton should target once the transfer window opens.
Olivier Giroud
The Toffees decided to disburse the money they got from selling Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United as they brought in their prodigal son Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez from Malaga to solve their forward situation.
But Koeman was completely wrong in judging the situation as the club have so far failed to replace Lukaku’s goals. The Belgian frontman led the club single-handedly last season as they qualified for Europe.
Olivier Giroud’s addition could come as a relief for the club. The French forward has lost his place in the starting lineup following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal and Everton could use this opportunity to snap him up under the nose of Arsene Wenger.
Opportunities are hard to come by for the French international and if he wants to cement a place in the France national team he needs to play regularly and Everton could offer him an escape route.
Stefan De Vrij
The defensive problem needs to be solved and they have to bring a top-notch centre back in January. Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij would be a very decent buy in the current circumstances.
The Dutch defender is blessed with solid defensive skills and is a very good tackler of the ball. He also has a good passing range so overall he is the perfect player that Everton needs at this moment.
Luke Shaw
This might sound a bit ambitious but Luke Shaw’s career needs a revival and Goodison Park could be a place where he would find ample time to resurrect his career.
The Toffees don’t have adequate cover on the left side of the defence as Leighton Baines will be turning 33 this December. So they need a player who would be able to match their expectation and Shaw fits the bill perfectly.
