The Red Devils of Manchester got off to the best possible start this season as Mourinho continues the trend of his ‘second season’ success. After a busy summer that saw the club spend in excess of £150m, Manchester United currently are sitting pretty in the second position in the league. Although their shock defeat to Huddersfield Town put some gap between them and table toppers Manchester City, the result was a one-off.
Mourinho’s men jumped right back into winning ways by beating Tottenham 1-0 at home and continuing their perfect record in the Champions League. They have played some entertaining, attacking football this season until the injury blow to their star midfielder Pogba, something the Old Trafford faithful have been craving for since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, Mourinho was desperate for a centre-back signing in the summer and the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica has diminished that particular need for the Portuguese tactician and the French teenager may no longer be a priority signing.
Currently, the Red Devils have Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo who can play in the centre back position. It will be difficult for Mourinho to adjust another centre back into the side. United also have makeshift cover at the middle of the park in the form of Daley Blind and Nemanja Matic as well.
Although they are suffering from a few injury problems at the moment, Mourinho’s expected to have his men back by the time January comes and it may no longer be necessary to add a new signing.
Upamecano completed a £8.8million switch from RB Salzburg in January to his new side RB Leipzig. He is now understood to have a buyout clause of £88m, an amount that will definitely preclude United out of any interest they might have harboured for the young French defender.
Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick previously said: “Due to his age, potential and style, he’s a player that adapts perfectly to the philosophy of our club.
“We are delighted that, despite having offers from big clubs, he decided to sign for us.”
The French defender who can also play as a defensive midfielder has had very impressive outings so far and it is not impossible to see why Leipzig have placed the 19-year old’s release clause at such a high amount.
However, if Mourinho is to lose any of his top centre-backs to a serious injury within January, it will not be surprising to see the Portuguese go in for the Frenchman despite his release clause.
