José Mourinho could move for Chelsea star Cesc Fàbregas as an alternative to Mesut Özil if he fails in his attempts to bring in the German. Reports suggest that Chelsea are readying a new contract for their experienced man that would fend off any interests for the Spaniard. But a potential reunion with his former manager could be on the cards if Fabregas decides to move to Old Trafford.
Fabregas has found new life under Conte this season having started 13 of The Blues’ first 16 matches. The experienced campaigner found himself down the pecking order last tenure after he started just 13 league games. Despite the limited number of appearances, he managed a tally of 5 goals and 12 assists. The talisman was Conte’s go to guy on the bench whenever Chelsea needed a spark of brilliance.
This season has been a turn around and Cesc is now a priority for Conte as he is short of options given Kante’s injury and Bakayoko still learning the trade in the Premier League. As a result, Chelsea are keen to increase the Spaniard’s accommodation at Stamford Bridge. But once all of Conte’s centre midfielders are fit and raring to go, does it guarantee a regular spot for Fabregas? It is something the World Cup winner will have to ponder about and come to a decision.
Fàbregas disliked Mourinho in his earlier days calling him his “enemy” during his time at Arsenal and Barcelona. But things changed significantly after their alliance at Chelsea claiming that the Portuguese is a person he would go “to the death”. From being a sore enemy to a person who he owes a lot to his latest development, Fabregas could be excited by the opportunity to team up with Mourinho once again.
United themselves are facing problems with the number of midfielders in the treatment room currently. Fàbregas’ addition would deepen the squad tremendously. The undisguised advantage in this move is his partnership renewal with Nemanja Matić. Both stalwarts are no strangers to one another. While one takes care of the industrial side to the game, the other ensures flair. Their lost love could once again be renewed and be magnetic to the entire team.
This is a move that probably seems way off the tables and a little absurd as well. It could well boil down to the contract situation at Chelsea that will eventually decide the Spaniard’s fate. But there is not the slightest of doubt that this transfer could well elate United to a whole new level and make them serious European heavyweights.
