Michael Carrick’s future is currently in a spot of bother. The veteran Manchester United midfielder hasn’t featured at all this season, which hasn’t gone down well with the player it seems. The 36-year-old has witnessed various ups and downs at Old Trafford since his move from Tottenham Hotspur but this ongoing season has just not kicked off for him.
According to reports, Leicester City are monitoring the condition of the player and are ready to offer him an escape route. Although Carrick would love to finish his career at Manchester, if Jose Mourinho continues to ignore him at the expense of other players, he could take a call in the near future.
In this growing competition, Carrick cannot complain about getting regular gameplay but he wants to be involved in at least a few games to keep himself in shape. The midfielder is currently battling with an injury and is on the verge of a return. It remains to be seen whether Mourinho uses the player or decides to go on with the flow.
Carrick came to rescue for the gaffer a number of times in the last season when United were riddled with injuries. Carrick put in a solid display in the midfield and his performances also earned him accolades from his manager.
Leicester made a winning start under their new manager Claude Puel, will be bristling with confidence. But they lost the ever dependant Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea on the deadline day and also failed to sign Adrien Silva as they missed the player’s registration deadline by 14 seconds.
Carrick would be a decent addition and given that his current contract is due to expire at the end of this season, he would like to command a cheaper fee. The likes of Gareth Barry have been in decent form this season and Carrick could follow the same path but currently, his promotion to the first team is blocked by a number of contenders with the likes of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.
Even Scott McTominay seems ahead of him in the pecking order so he might feel the urge to leave the club in January. Mourinho rated the player pretty highly but the current situation doesn’t allow him to experiment with the squad balance.
Leicester could test United’s resolve in January but it is very unlikely the gaffer will sanction the move, given the current mess at the club from an injury perspective. A player like him deserves the utmost respect and the club has to ensure that he gets his due credit once he decides to hang up his boots.
But is he the right man for the Foxes?
