In a rigid game against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at the weekend, a late goal from Anthony Martial gave Manchester United three crucial points, which could well be the plot twist this season. Jose Mourinho’s side had a point to prove, following their shocking loss at the hand of the Huddersfield Town and the Red Devils now have a reason to smile again.
Their Champions League campaign also got off to a great start with three wins out of three and they can completely seal a place to the next round with a victory over Benfica at the Old Trafford this week. The Red Devils are yet to concede at home this season but their brilliant defensive line would face a stern test against the Portuguese side.
Jose Mourinho is expected to ring in a number of changes to the side which secured a 1-0 win against Spurs.
Predicted 4-2-3-1 Manchester United Starting Lineup Vs Benfica
Defence
Jose Mourinho has opted to go with David De Gea in this competition so far and he is likely to continue with the Spanish in the goal. The custodian has been in excellent form and it would take a miraculous effort to defeat him these days.
Victor Lindelof was at fault for the first goal against Huddersfield but will have another chance to redeem himself. Phil Jones has unarguably the best man in defence so far and will start at the heart of the defence.
Matteo Darmian will make a start in this match while Daley Blind will be in the contention for a start on the left side of the defence.
Midfield
The absence of Paul Pogba hasn’t been felt so far and with the player continuing his recovery from an injury, Mourinho will stick with Ander Herrera. The Spaniard has justified his selection and is relishing his chances so far.
Nemanja Matic’s presence in the middle of the pitch has been a major factor this season and the Serbian will have to play a big role in this match.
Attack
Jesse Lingard ran a one-man show against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup and is likely to be rewarded with a place in the starting lineup. Juan Mata will be the no. 10.
Anthony Martial netted the winner against Spurs and would be hoping for a similar outcome in this match. Romelu Lukaku will start up front. Here is how they might line up:
