Liverpool looked to be on the rise, having finished the previous season with a place in the Champions League. However, their form this season has been far from good and the Reds have lost two, while drawing four of their first nine matches.
The Merseyside club are eyeing redemption and are willing to make their team stronger with the inclusion of new players. They are emphasising on bringing in a few top class defenders, given the fact that they do not have enough quality in their backline, which is compounded by the fact that they have already let in 16 goals this season.
Liverpool have the likes of Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren playing at the heart of their defence, all of whom have failed to make a mark so far this season. This has led the Reds to look for new defensive options to be included in the side and here are three players they can target in January:
Kalidou Koulibaly (AS Napoli):
The Senegalese defender has been the mainstay in the defence for his side, Napoli in the last few seasons. The 26-year-old centre-back is known for his immense physical presence and is one of the most dependable players in the air. It is quite unlikely that the current Serie A leaders will let go of their prized possession but Liverpool might look to bag him in the next transfer window, giving the backline a world of stability.
Stefan de Vrij
Another defender from Serie A, Stefan De Vrij, has been linked with a number of clubs over the last few months including Liverpool. The Reds might look to bring him into the side in January and have been showing interest in signing the player.
The 25-year-old Dutchman is considered as one of the best players in Europe in a defensive role and might be a very good addition to the Liverpool lineup. However, the fact that he might be on his way to signing a new contract with his present club Lazio might be a glitch for the Merseyside club to sign him.
Ben Gibson
The Englishman has been tracked by a number of big-name clubs in the Premier League since his brilliant show for his side Middlesbrough in the last term. The Boro captain might be a very good addition t0 the Liverpool lineup and help to stabilise their defence. However, his uncle and Middlesbrough club president Peter Gibson is adamant to not let go of the prized defender in the next transfer window.
