Jesse Lingard provided two magical moments as Manchester United cruised past Swansea City 2-0 to move towards the last eight of the Carabao Cup this week. The Red Devils were hoping to shrug off their shock defeat at the hand of Huddersfield Town in the last match and they did it very convincingly with a very controlled and professional display at the Liberty Stadium.
Lingard provided the first breakthrough in the 21 minute. Ander Herrera provided a defence-splitting through ball to find Rashford who made an incisive flick to Lingard. Lingard didn’t make any mistake as he slotted home to score his first of the night.
United kept on pressing and the second goal was never too far. Matteo Darmian played a delightful cross from the right-hand side and Lingard powered in with a delightful header to take the game away from the Swans
Let us have a look at the player ratings
Sergio Romero- 6.5
The Argentine international didn’t have too many troubles as Swansea remained toothless in their attack. He made two great saves of Tammy Abraham and Leroy Fer in the dying minutes of the game.
Victor Lindelof- 6
Another subpar performance from the new recruit. The Swedish defender has had his problems with long balls and was caught out of position a number of times.
Chris Smalling- 7
His tall presence at the back assured there were no casualties.
Axel Tuanzebe- 7
The youngster was the mobile one among the three defenders and also played a crucial role in the build up the second goal.
Matteo Darmian- 7
Had a good game. Also provided the cross which led to the second goal.
Daley Blind- 6.5
Had some nervy moments but dealt with the danger pretty neatly.
Ander Herrera- 7
Played a solid game as he bossed the midfield with his incisive passing and strong vision.
Scott McTominay- 6.5
Complemented Herrera pretty well and covered a lot of spaces across the ground.
Jesse Lingard- 8.5
Undoubtedly the man of the match. The 24-year-old would be hoping for redemption and passed the test with flying colours. His awareness and strong intent to move forward helped the team immensely.
Anthony Martial- 6.5
Had a few good bursting runs but couldn’t make out much from this outing.
Marcus Rashford- 7
Had a quiet night. Provided the deft assist for the first goal.
Substitutes
Nemanja Matic- 6.5
Kept things calm in the middle of the pitch.
Romelu Lukaku- 6
Did his best to link up with the other attackers.
Luke Shaw
Didn’t have enough time.
