Borussia Dortmund successfully managed to overcome their mini-drought as the Black and Yellows registered an emphatic victory over Magdeburg in the second round of the DFB Pokal. The Bundesliga league leaders swept aside a hapless Magdeburg 5:0 through goals from five different scorers.
Die Schwarzgelb book their ticket for the third round as they look to successful defender their cup title this season. Dortmund will be eager to witness tomorrow’s high-end encounter between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Knowing the fact that either one of them will be knocked out by the end this round is sure to hand the defending champions some more relief in the competition.
Here are the Borussia Dortmund players rated in their astonishing win over the third tier German outfit.
Roman Burki (7.5/10): Played well despite facing harsh criticism from fans time and time again. The Swiss looked confident in his ball handling and long passing, which is sure to help him in the coming matches.
Marc Bartra (9/10): Surprisingly looked very impressive in his unnatural right back position. The Catalan defender made proper use of his pace and ball carrying abilities to operate the right side of the defence. His well-timed header also illustrated his aerial abilities later on in the game. It was his third goal of the campaign.
Sokratis (8/10): Showed some terrific leadership qualities to prevail against Magdeburg defensively. Sokratis was a complete rock in defence, which proved to be impregnable for the opposing attackers.
Dan-Axel Zagadou (8/10): Remained solid throughout the game. Zagadou’s presence in defence was intimidating, to say the least for the Magdeburg forwards.
Nuri Sahin (8.5/10): Controlled the tempo of the game with his excellent passing and brilliant composure. Sahin was very impressive in his switch of plays, which caught the opposition off-guard. In addition, the Turkish midfielder was also a real menace from distance.
Mahmoud Dahoud (7.5/10): Looked very good while he was on but unfortunately for the midfielder, he suffered a knock which forced him to be subbed off just before the half-time whistle.
Shinji Kagawa (9.5/10): An absolutely stunning performance from the Japanese International. Shinji Kagawa was really no match for the hapless defence of Magdeburg. His creativity and movements helped Dortmund create a lot of chances in the final third and the playmaker also scored a stunning goal to cap off his performance on the night.
Andriy Yarmolenko (8.5/10): Wasn’t involved much in the first half but his influence increased in the second half where he was involved in almost every Dortmund attack. Scored his third goal of the campaign when he successfully converted the penalty in the second half.
Alexander Isak (9/10): Showed great spirit to constantly press the opposing centre backs. Looked much better on the ball and his great finish was a perfect way to cap off an excellent performance.
Maximilian Philipp (8/10): Looked dangerous every time he got onto the ball. However, his influence decreased drastically in the second half but that didn’t stop him from providing a remarkable for Shinji Kagawa’s goal in the final minutes of the game.
Subs
Gonzalo Castro (7.5/10): Replaced Mahmoud Dahoud in the 40th minute and scored the opener shortly afterwards. Didn’t really provide any notable contributions in midfield, largely being bogged down by his awful touches and lack of temperament.
Raphael Guerreiro (8/10): Made a glorious comeback from injury for his first appearance of the new season. Guerreiro made an instant impact with his terrific movements and clever operation on the left flank. Borussia Dortmund will be massively aided by his comeback from injury.
Andre Schurrle (NA): Was subbed on for the final phase of the game. The German International showed a lot of grit as he looked to impress new coach Peter Bosz.
