The transfer deadline day is always an exciting one for football fans and Rangers have not let us down on this eventful day. Despite being very active throughout the summer, Mark Warburton came up with an excellent deadline day signing in the form of Swiss international defender Philippe Senderos on a free transfer. The 31-year-old has signed a one-year-old at Ibrox and could be making his Rangers debut in a classic manner against arch rivals Celtic on the 10th of September.
Senderos was a free agent right now having left Swiss side Grasshoppers this summer and had been training with the Gers. The 31-year-old could prove to be a big addition to the Gers with the experience he possesses at the highest stage. During his illustrious career, the 31-year-old has graced the pitch for clubs like Arsenal, Valencia, Milan, Everton, Fulham and Aston Villa.
Capped 57 times for Switzerland, the 31-year-old comes with a plethora of international experience as well and had represented Switzerland in three World Cups. The Swiss international began his career at Servette, before moving to England as a teenager with Arsenal. He eventually became a regular at Arsenal and won the FA Cup in 2005. After two loan spells away from the Emirates with Milan and Everton respectively, Senderos joined Fulham and then made his move to Valencia before joining Aston Villa.
He had always been a good defender but if not for his injury troubles, he could have reached further heights. In his last season at Aston Villa, he failed to get much game time despite all his experience. Although, the Swiss international can still find life good in the Premiership considering the mammoth difference in the level of Premiership with the English Premier League.
Rangers signing the 31-year-old only on a one-year-old makes the perfect sense from the Gers’ point of view. Even if the defender struggles to make his mark at the club of struggles with injuries, Rangers won’t have to pay for it for too long while if he becomes a hit, there is always a chance of a new contract.
Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson have made a solid defensive pairing at Ibrox but both lack top-level experience and that is why Senderos has been brought in. The duo could benefit from spending time with the experienced centre-back. still only 31, Senderos still has some good years left in him and can revive his career at Ibrox.
