Ryan Giggs’ dream of managing a Premier League club could soon become reality as he is reportedly one of the contenders to become the Leicester City manager. The Foxes showed the door to Craig Shakespeare recently following their dismal start to the season and are on the hunt for a new manager.
Michael Appleton, one of Shakespeare’s trusted aide, is currently the interim boss of the Foxes and the club hierarchy doesn’t want to rush things as of now. Since they have won the Premier League title they had two managerial changes.
It seems following their unprecedented success, the club owner wants to ensure the club does not get carried away by the success and remain rigid on their path. The Foxes parted ways with title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri as the former boss failed to replicate his magic in the next season.
Shakespeare was handed the responsibility following the departure of Ranieri and he managed to sneak in with some hard-fought management as he went on to lead the team to a respectable position. They also went on to have an unexpected run in the Champions League as they managed to get to the Quarterfinal stage but failed to get the better of Atletico Madrid in the quarters.
Giggs was an assistant during Luis Van Gaal’s reign at the Old Trafford but he later went on to quit the club in an attempt to concentrate on his solo managerial career and he even rejected the chance to work with Jose Mourinho.
Leicester had also interviewed him following the sacking of Ranieri but they went ahead with Shakespeare. This time it is a real opportunity for the former Welsh player to test his managerial skills. A number of top managers like Carlo Ancelotti, Chris Coleman and Roy Hodgson are also reportedly in line for this job.
Ancelotti recently was relieved from his duty at the Allianz Arena after a dip in the form of the German giants and is now without a job. On the other hand, Hodgson recently took control at Selhurst Park so he is unavailable at this moment. So Giggs could be a very good candidate but his inexperience as a manager could be a spoilsport.
Giggs was linked with the Swansea City job also but later, the Wales club decided to pursue Paul Clement who happens to be the former assistant of Ancelotti.
If Giggs does take charge at the King Power Stadium, he will be under tremendous pressure from the very first day given the stiff competition in the top tier these days. But can his experience help Leicester back up the points table?
