Barcelona haven’t given up on the pursuit of Ander Herrera and are reportedly considering making an approach for the player. Amidst the gloom last season, Barcelona have started this season on a very fine note and although it is too soon to predict, they are very much the favourites for the La Liga title.
Ernesto Valverde has gone on to make a very good start to his Barcelona career and wants to further strengthen his position at the club by bringing more reinforcements in the summer. Having guided Herrera during his time at Athletic Bilbao, he knows him well and is eyeing a reunion at the Camp Nou.
The 28-year-old was the standout player last season and was duly rewarded for his actions on the pitch as he got the much acclaimed ‘Sir Matt Busby player of the year’ award as a token of appreciation. But the arrival of Nemanja Matic has blocked his path to the first team this season as he has been the second fiddle to Matic but Jose Mourinho has assured the player he will get his chance very soon.
Herrera’s current deal is due to end at the end of this season and there have been positive talks regarding his contract situation at the Old Trafford. Despite playing only a handful of games this season, the Red Devils are ready to offer him a much-improved term to extend the player’s stay in Manchester.
Andre Gomes is getting better by the day and he also seems to have the support of Ernesto Valverde but the Portuguese international’s future is in doldrums and if he opts to leave, Valverde wants to bring Herrera as a replacement.
Herrera arrived in 2014 from Athletic Bilbao and since then, has been a man in form. United were struggling as they didn’t have a proper defensive midfielder in the ranks and Herrera fitted into that position seamlessly. His displays in the middle of the pitch also earned him his first international cap for Spain.
Despite all the rumours, the Spanish midfielder seems to be pretty happy with the current situation and wants to continue his development under the tutelage of Mourinho. United have a very hectic schedule ahead and the gaffer needs to have his all players ready for any kind of need.
Barcelona have been tracking the player for quite a while but an offer hasn’t been made. It would be very surprising if United let him leave this season and in fact, it would be disastrous from a Manchester United standpoint. But can Herrera be an option for the Catalans?
