Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose. The 27-year old full-back is regarded as one top wing backs in the English Premier League over the last couple of years. The England international’s hot form has left a trail of suitors chasing him in the transfer market.
While United were rumoured to be after Rose in the summer window, it is now been reported that Chelsea also have joined in and will look to bring in the left-back to add some much-needed cover for Marcos Alonso, who currently is the only player occupying the position in the club if we are to disregard Kenedy, who can play as a makeshift left back as well.
Rose’s rise to fame came in a north London derby back in April, 2010 when he scored an incredible strike from 30 yards out to settle the match for his team. Wenger described the 19-year old Leeds United graduate’s strike as a ‘goal in a million’. Although the left-back made a debut to remember for the rest of his life, his Tottenham career took a downturn and the left-back left on loan in search of more game time.
His loan spells at Sunderland and Bristol City did not last long and the English player was another promising star that was on the brink of a great career after being named the club’s Young player of the year after the 2012-13 season.
His career began to take an upward path from the 2013-14 and Rose has since gone on to establish himself as a mainstay in the Tottenham back line. Although miniature in size, his tremendous pace, ability to dribble and stout nature has made him a forceful opponent. His ability to make crunching tackles and play at a high tempo combined with his energy to go on the overlap, for the full ninety minutes in a match, has made him the ideal modern day fullback.
At 27, Rose has 11 career goals and 25 assists, a number pretty decent for a player who has to play his entire game running up and down on the left channel. He has also established himself as England’s first-choice left back for the time being, although his latest injury might force him to lose his current spot in the Three Lions’ set-up.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Rose certainly would help the club bring in some much-needed cover and although local rivals Tottenham would hate to lose their star man to Chelsea, a big-money offer and a considerably higher wage would be hard to turn down for both the club and the player.
With Rose and Alonso, Antonio Conte would have enough cover and be able to rotate the two wing-backs in order to avoid fatigue and burnout, something Conte is fearful of now, with Alonso playing virtually in every match. Rose’s pace would be extremely handy for the Blues down the left channel and linking up with Hazard, the duo can cause some damage on the left-wing for any opposition.
