David Moyes has not gotten off to the best starts to his time back in the Premier League after taking over the Black Cats earlier this summer. They have taken just the one point from the first three games leading into the international break and the manager is now looking to add some more players to his squad before the end of the transfer window. The club has looked a bit weak in defence with the manager desperate for additions to his back four since he took over the club and reports today have suggested that the Black Cats are looking to add Guinea international Florentin Pogba to their squad this summer.
The 26-year old who was once a part of the France U20 national squad is now playing for the Guinea national team and has been an important part of the team for some time now. He made his professional debut with Celta Vigo in Spain and is currently playing in France for Saint Etienne, a club he joined 4 years ago. However, he has not been able to cement a place in the squad in France and is looking for a move away from the club with David Moyes’ Sunderland reportedly interested in bringing him to the Premier League.
A centre back by trait, Pogba is one of the best defenders in the air in League 1. He is a strong presence in both penalty boxes and is a defender who loves to command his area. He is a patient, no-nonsense defender who keeps it simple making him a decent option for a club in any of the top European leagues.
He might not yet at the level where he can play as a first choice centre back for a club in the Premier League immediately (could prove us wrong though) but a move to the Stadium of Light might be the right start for his career in England (and maybe get one over his brother Paul).
The former Manchester United manager has used Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji for the first three games of the new season at the back and is clearly looking to improve on his back line. He also has the likes of Paddy McNair and John O’Shea to provide cover for the first choice duo but Moyes is adamant that he still needs options at the back. So Florentin Pogba seems to be the man the manager has identified to help him next season and is hoping to add him to his squad.
The 26-year old will provide that extra mettle to the squad and will also bring some European pedigree with him from his time in Spain and France and will hope that he can have an immediate impact on the club. He is a player who is well suited for the Premier League and though he may not be able to find a place in the starting XI straight away, Moyes will give him a chance to prove himself and will hope that he can provide him with enough options at the back in crunch times. What do you think Florentin Pogba will add to Sunderland this season?
