Pochettino’s zero tolerance policy on romanticism has seen Nacer Chadli, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb being axed. Other than these three, I don’t see any more players departing this season. This, in turn, has left the squad quite thin with only two days left for the transfer windows which leaves them with a lot to do in the transfer market.
Pochettino stated in a recent press conference that he has some targets in mind and even if they don’t manage to get them he’d be happy with the squad at his disposal. He also stated that the Wilfried Zaha link was just a rumour despite Sky Sports claiming otherwise. The lack of arrivals might not only result in a substandard squad with no proper backup options with numerous competitions to compete in but would signify the club’s inability to take advantage of the club’s ascent to the Champions League as well.
With the other top clubs doing so well in the Premier league, it may be extremely tough to make it to the Champions League next season and so Tottenham must relish the opportunity they have to attract top players to the club.
The sales have already yielded decent money with Chadli, Pritchard and Mason and constituting most of it. Tottenham have seen the arrivals of Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama for a total fee of £29.6m which decent money to spend as the net spend is negative.
Kevin N’Koudou deal is imminent and it’s highly likely that the youngster will not be directly injected into the first team squad. It is not the type of signing which will pay dividends right away it will take time for the club to reap the benefits of the investment.
Tottenham are currently short on option on three positions. They don’t have conventional wingers with pace on either side. In addition, they also need a back-up box-to-box midfielder which not only holds the midfield but also helps offensively.
Tottenham have been recently linked with Real Madrid’s Isco and James Rodriguez on a loan move as well. While there are reasons to be sceptic about either deal going through, they are exactly what Tottenham need. They will not only both be ‘statement’ signings but would also massively improve the squad and make them competent among the elites.
Other than that, Tottenham have also been recently linked with a late move for Newcastle United’s midfielder Mousa Sissoko. The French International can play both either as a winger and as a box-to-box midfielder which would help Tottenham cover up two positions but his massive price-tag of £35m could prove to be a big stumbling block.
Tottenham are likely to remain highly active in the late hours of the summer transfer and with the squad so thin, fans expect a few signings especially a winger. We expect a minimum of two signings including Kevin N’Koudou.
