Tottenham Hotspur will be looking forward to the start of the season after they finally gelled as a team and looked like fulfilling their potential under Mauricio Pochettino. The former Southampton manager was able to lift the game of every individual in the team and helped them click as a unit. They had a series of commendable performances where they looked assured of themselves and the performances did not seem like a flash-in-the-pan occurrence. Discounting their minor blip towards the end of last season, where they dismantled after it became apparent that it was theoretically impossible to catch eventual champions Leicester City, the rest of the season was a satisfying and reassuring one for Spurs.
While players like Delle Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Kane emerged from the campaign with enhanced reputations, they will be aware of their under-performance in the Euros for the Three Lions. Though the reasons stated are the apparent burn-out of these players as well as the fact that England failed to perform as a team, they will be aware that with an extended break they will be expected to hit the ground running.
While they will have to deal with the increased number of matches due to their participation in various competitions, Spurs will look to add extra cover to their squad. Three players who will have an important role to play in the upcoming season are listed below.
HARRY KANE
The undisputed star player over the last couple of seasons, the English forward’s rise has been meteoric. He has performed regardless of the stature of the opposition and has been prolific throughout. He has scored a whopping 46 goals in the last two seasons in the league and will look to carry on in the same manner this campaign.
His work-rate and eagerness to chase the ball rubs off on his teammates and suits the high-intensity tactics of Pochettino. Tottenham will hope the signing of Janssen will relieve a bit of weight off Kane’s shoulders, and he remains fresh throughout the campaign which will be crucial for Spurs.
TOBY ALDERWEIRELD
The Belgian has been a mainstay at the heart of the defence after his move Southampton. His experience at St.Mary’s helped the defender adjust quickly in the Premier League surroundings. Alderweireld’s partnership with Vertonghen was crucial to their solidity and creativity from the back.
With Vertonghen expected to miss the beginning of the season, the onus will be on the Belgian to shore up the defence in his fellow Belgian’s absence. Toby has not only been immense at the back with 294 clearances, 66 interceptions and 33 blocks but also has been a constant threat in the opposition’s penalty box. He scored 4 goals and also assisted 2 goals, in addition, to have provided 8 key passes. The White Hart Lane outfit will hope he kicks off the campaign in a similar manner as last season.
MOUSA DEMBELE
Another Belgian who has not yet fulfilled his potential, Dembele in full flight is capable of being up there with the best but has had injuries and inconsistency blight his career. Pochettino has seemingly figured a way to utilise the stylish midfielder and fans would be hoping he will have an uninterrupted season once he returns from suspension.
His strong physique helps him shield the ball and his dribbling ability puts wingers to shame. His 90% passing accuracy illustrates his ability to keep the tempo of the game flowing. Though the former Fulham man will look to increase his end product of 3 goals but his understanding with Alli and Kane has been a huge bonus for Spurs. His absence has been visibly felt by the team and Dembele will look to be fit as he attempts to glide his way past defenders and show his capabilities on the biggest stage of club football.
