The transfer window maybe over but that hasn’t stopped Jose Mourinho from pursuing Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich. If reports from Italian newspaper Tuttosport, are to believed, Manchester United could revamp their interest in the Bayern Munich striker in January.
Thomas Muller has long been a target for the Red Devils over the years. Back in 2015 when Louis van Gaal was in charge, United submitted a then world-record bid of £85million which was rejected. Reports also emerged that Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all inquired about the availability of Thomas Muller.
Muller has had a decorated professional career, with Bayern Munich being the only club in his career. So it’s understandable as to why he is so committed to the Bavarian outfit, while he could have moved elsewhere with a bigger paycheck. During his time at Bayern, Muller collected 17 trophies and was a part of Bayern’s most glittering years in the past few decades.
However, his valuation in the team has severely taken a downturn in recent months, thanks to his blunt form last year, in which he only scored five Bundesliga goals. Despite chipping in with a lot of assists, fans didn’t exactly like what Muller offered to the team as a ramdeuter.
This summer, the club has brought in loads of attacking talents. The record signing of attacking midfielder Corentin Tolisso and the loan signing of Colombian starlet James Rodriguez, in particular, has caused a lot of eyebrows this summer and experts predicted that it might be the start of the end of Muller’s chapter with FC Bayern.
As expected, Muller wasn’t a constant feature in the club’s pre-season friendlies, and players like Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery or Robert Lewandowski were often chosen ahead of him by coach Carlo Ancelotti. For that reason, many of the top European clubs are hopeful of luring the German International away from the Allianz Arena in the near future.
Manchester United seem to have emerged as the top candidate to do with coach Jose Mourinho, seemingly showing interest in the 27-year-old. But could a move to Old Trafford make sense for the player?
Well, looking at it from the player’s perspectives, it seems like a bad decision to make a move to a different league in mid-season, especially with the World Cup just around the corner.
Thomas Muller is widely regarded as the best attacking prospect for Germany at the moment, and a move to the Premier League during mid-season could create a series of uncertainties over his future and his form. Whether or not he can perform in the PL remains a doubt, and even if he does, it will surely take time for him settle in, something Muller can’t really afford at the moment.
He is the highest goal-getter in the history of the World Cup, which provides enough evidence as to just how important Muller is to Germany.
At Bayern, he might not have the playing time as Manchester United can propose, but at least, it can be guaranteed that he will perform given the opportunities. Despite his lack of goals, Muller’s contributions to the offence hasn’t gone unnoticed as he provided the most number of key passes compared to other Bayern player last season. So in truth, he is still an important offensive outlet for the German record champions – someone they could always turn to when things look bleak.
Therefore, it seems naive to even imagine, Thomas Muller, departing Bayern Munich in January. However, a move could be very likely after the world cup, when the player will have the privilege of pondering over his future.
