Manchester City may have made a number of superb signings this summer but they have not been able to make a strong start in the Premier League. They did win two of their three games and are still unbeaten but they have not shown enough promise to tag them as favourites for the league title.
Pep Guardiola wanted a few more additions to his squad this summer but was unable to get his hands on most of his top transfer targets. But even with the window now closed, he is planning for deals that can be done at the turn of the year.
The January transfer market will give Pep a chance to improve on his squad and though he will want to add some big names, he also wants to get rid of a few and one such player who might be out of the club come the end of the season is English winger Raheem Sterling.
The 22-year old joined Manchester City in a mega-money deal from Liverpool not so long ago and though he has been decent, has not been able to cement a place in the first team at the Etihad yet. He was reportedly offered to Arsenal as a part of the deal to land Alexis Sanchez this summer and though that deal did not materialize, Sterling seems to have little future at the club.
According to the Telegraph, London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea are both interested in his services and are convinced that he will be sold in January. So should City let Sterling leave? Does he have any future at Etihad?
At just 22, the former Liverpool man is one of the most exciting wingers on show in the league but his lack of consistency and ability to finish chances has often hampered City’s chances in the last couple of seasons.
He has scored two winners in the last two games for City but has not done enough to warrant a place in the first team under Pep and with the Spaniard planning to land the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Sterling has no real role in the first team at the club anymore.
He has immense experience and is a serious part of the national side for England but Sterling is not the kind of a player who can win City the league title and will only play a supporting role if he stays back in Manchester.
He has loads of potential and can help most teams in England and with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea interested, it is better for him to shift clubs to find regular playing time elsewhere. As far as City are concerned, they will get enough compensation from his sale to allow them to spend on a superstar from Europe as an adequate replacement. But do you think City should hold on to Sterling?
