According to reports, Premier League side Burnley had come extremely close to signing Chilean forward Nicolas Castillo this summer before a lack of EU passport of the player resulted in the deal to break down in the last minute. Reports from Chile have claimed that after the deal for Castillo fell through, the Clarets went for the likes of Chris Wood and Nahki Wells.
Burnley have started their Premier League campaign in a mixed manner this season with one win, one draw and a loss in the opening three games. Considering that the win and the draw against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, Sean Dyche would be more than happy with his side’s performance.
Following the sale Andre Gray just before the league started, the fans were pleasantly surprised when the Clarets took down Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the opening game of the season. In the four games that Burnley have played so far including the one against Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup, Dyche’s men have scored six goals.
Scoring has clearly not been a problem for the Clarets so far and Dyche got his money’s worth when new arrival Chris Wood came off the bench to bang in an equalizer against the mighty Tottenham Hotspur in the dying minutes of the game. However, if the English gaffer has learnt anything from last season, he knows that the long and gruelling season will have many twists and turns and players will have a dry patch on the way.
Although in Sam Vokes, Wells and Wood, Dyche has three prolific goal getters, he would want one more to add thicken his bench and add more competition to the side. Given that Castillo was Dyche’s first choice as per reports, he is expected to go for him again in January when a few more international caps would help him push through the work permit.
The 24-year-old centre forward has scored 13 goals in 20 matches for Mexican side UNAM Pumas at the start of the year and is highly rated by many in the Chilean football system. An academy product of Chilean side CD Universidad Católica, Castillo made his first big move to Belgian side Club Brugge after scoring 39 goals in 70 games.
He was prolific in the Jupiler Pro League too where he managed to score 13 goals in 39 games before he was sold to the German side, Mainz. However, he was handed only one game there and soon returned to Belgium. He has since the spent loan moves with CUDC and Italian side Frosinone Calcio before Pumas bought him in January last year.
