Newcastle United are getting close to a move for Belgian sensation Divock Origi who has been strongly linked with a move away for quite a while now. They are in the company of Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace who are also in the race to sign the Belgian forward. With his place way down the pecking order, Origi’s chances of leaving Anfield is increasingly probable.
Liverpool’s big win over Arsenal last game will convince Jurgen Klopp more than anything that his attacking three is going to be the first choice throughout the season. With Daniel Sturridge coming next in the pecking order, Origi is unlikely to see much action this season too.
Reportedly, Origi’s father has hinted that he would prefer his son to move to Tottenham Hotspur and that makes it a possible destination. The Eagles are also expected to have a slight chance of landing the big framed striker giving some support to Christian Benteke.
And according to reports, the Mags have joined the party late but have emerged as a strong contender to sign the 22-year-old forward with former boss Rafael Benitez having a warm relationship with him. Despite starting the season in the most terrible way possible, Newcastle have still found new arrival Joselu and Aleksandr Mitrovic doing well in front of goal. However, Benitez would still want more competition for that position and Origi could be a good fit.
Although Newcastle United are unlikely to edge past everyone in the three-way battle for his signature given the financial restraints under which Benitez had to work this season, the Spaniard would definitely go for the last try before the window closes tomorrow. Origi has had a mixed season with Liverpool so far but has never quite successfully broken into the first team since moving to Anfield after his 2014 World Cup heroics.
He was given the first big chance by Klopp against Tottenham with Benteke, Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino all injured for the game. He had started with an impressive display then but an unfortunate ankle ligament injury during a Merseyside derby limited his chances.
He continued to remain a bench player last season too with Phillipe Coutinho, Firmino and Sadio Mane leading the line, although the 21-year-old still managed to score 11 goals in all competitions. With the World Cup coming again next year, he is hungry for chances and if Newcastle can convince him of that, the battle is almost won.
