Manchester United started this season with a bang as the Red Devils have scored a majestic 10 goals in the first three matches to put themselves in a very comfortable position. Alongside attack, defenders have also given a good account of themselves as the Red Devils are yet to concede a goal in the English top tier.
According to reports, Leicester City are eyeing a move for United defender Chris Smalling. The English international has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to Old Trafford.
United are currently in no hurry to get a deal done but if Smalling continues to be at the receiving end, he might be in the need to sort out his future very quickly. He is one of the few defenders in Gareth Southgate’s wish list who is in the contention to make it to the Three Lions squad for the World Cup which is scheduled to start in the next year. But his present condition could hamper his chances.
Leicester do have Wes Morgan, Harry Maguire and Robert Huth in their defensive section but both Morgan and Huth looked pretty ordinary in the last season and this season too, they haven’t been able to recall their brilliant performance from the 2015/16 campaign.
If Smalling comes, he will be the obvious first choice for the Foxes and could be seen partnering Maguire in the backline. He had appeared as a trusted employee for Luis Van Gaal as the Dutch gaffer heavily used him during his brief tenure with the Red Devils.
Smalling even was adjudged the player of the year award but his failure to back up his performance s hasn’t done well for him. United’s defensive contingent is pretty strong as Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind can also fill in the backline while Victor Lindelof is yet to have the first taste of the Premier League since his multimillion-dollar move from Benfica this summer.
Craig Shakespeare’s side looked defensively vulnerable at times and in the opening match only, they conceded four goals to Arsenal.
Smalling came through the ranks of Millwall and joined United in 2010. Mourinho also was very unhappy with the player’s lack of ambition last season and had publicly criticized him after getting frustrated over the player’s knack of getting a frequent injury.
Mourinho is unlikely to give him a start as things stand and given the present scenario a move to the King Power Stadium would be profitable for him. But is he right man for Leicester?
