According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney as Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing a replacement for Danny Rose before the transfer window closes as the English full-back’s future at the club remains increasingly uncertain owing to his unending injury and controversial comments.
Tierney has been an important player for Brendan Rodgers’ side since his arrival at the helm of Celtic. The 20-year-old has been one of the hottest prospects in the transfer market this summer with Premier League clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea all keen to land him once. While United still have interest in the Scottish sensation, Spurs could be in the driving seat to land him.
While Ben Davies had a nervy first-team start to their campaign last season, when Danny Rose was ruled out for the entire season mid-campaign, Rose has now fallen out of favour with the board of late and Davies looks likely to stay as the regular.
Rose had publicly criticized the club for their underwhelming summer activities as the Lilywhites were very late to make any signing while all the other challengers splurged heavily. The English full-back also didn’t hold back his dissatisfaction with his current wage deal that is believed to be around £60k per-week, with him also indicating that he would like a move to Chelsea and Manchester United, who would be willing to double that.
While Rose is expected to return by next month, Pochettino is unsure of granting him the first team place now. And if their reported interest in Tierney is true, Rose is going to see more time on the bench this season as Spurs won’t be willing to sell him to other league contenders.
Tierney is popular in Scotland for his phenomenal pace and attacking attributes from that left wing. The brilliant passer of the ball moves forward with an intent everytime he has the ball and his ability to find perfect crosses into the box. Although at 178cm, he isn’t the tallest of frames, his persistence makes him strong and his ability to read the game compensates for his shortcomings.
He played in Celtic’s emphatic 5-0 victory against Kazakhstan club Astana in the UEFA Champions league playoff first leg and also saw the fans putting up his face on a banner. He said: “And the display before the game, I was buzzing with that. It was class. I really enjoyed that. It’s crazy. You can’t really prepare for the Celtic Park atmosphere. You think you know what it’s like but it still takes you by surprise.”
