If reports are to be believed, the Championship side Hull City are now eyeing a move for Huddersfield Town striker Nahki Wells after they saw their first-choice forward Abel Hernandez getting a massive injury blow, who is likely to repeat his previous season’s long absence. Wells played a crucial role for the Terriers last season and is seen as a successful talent for the second-tier tournament.
The Uruguayan striker suffered a ruptured Achilles and is expected to miss up to six months, which is basically most of this season leaving manager Leonid Slutski with the options of Adama Diomande and Frazer Campbell. What makes it all the more frustrating is Hernandez’s scoring form since the beginning. The 27-year-old scored 3 goals in 3 games so far, keeping the Tigers in the top half.
Hull City have been very active this summer after last season ended in disaster. Impressive manager Marco Silva departed soon after the relegation joining Premier League side Watford and the Tigers brought in the Russian gaffer. He has brought in seven players so far- Callum Burton, Michael Hector (loan), Ondrej Mazuch, Ola Aina (loan), Kevin Stewart, Sebastian Larsson and Frazer Campbell.
The Tigers have had a mixed start to their season, winning one, losing two and drawing another so far. While the season is going to be long, Slutski would want to garner as many points as possible before the eventual tiredness creeps in and the slow start hasn’t made things easier.
Despite a decent display under manager David Wagner in their promotion campaign, the emergence of the mercurial Steve Mounié has put his place in danger. The former Ligue 1 striker arrived in England at the back of £11.5 million and has already bagged two goals in his first game. Hence, first-team football could be difficult to come by for the Bermuda international.
What makes it all the more difficult is his current ankle injury that keeps him out for five to seven weeks. But his quality remains undeniable. He began his playing career in his native Bermuda before Bradford City bought him following a successful trial in 2010. He was awarded a one-year contract with the club and managed to score 12 goals in all competitions.
His contract was renewed and he kept his scoresheet ticking, scoring 41 goals in 75 over the next season-and-a-half, earning a move to Championship side Huddersfield Town. He really flourished there scoring 48 goals in 152 games for the Terriers, which included 10 Championship goals last season helping them gain promotion.
The Tigers would hope the striker does something similar for them this time and they are willing to wait for him to recover before he takes the field.
