Manchester City are one of the favourites to lift the Premier League title this season as they have a squad that is among the strongest, not just in England but also in Europe. The Spanish manager Pep Guardiola has spent over £200m, most of it on his defence but it looks like he is not done with his business yet this summer.
It is understood that Guardiola still wants another centre back in his squad to make sure that they can compete on all four fronts this season and one name extensively linked with a move to the club is former Manchester United star, Jonny Evans.
The skipper of the West Bromwich Albion side at the moment, Evans is one of the most dependable defenders in England at the moment and was in terrific form last season, helping the Baggies to a place in the top half of the table. This has seen him linked with a move to a number of English clubs recently and Manchester City are one of the first clubs to make a concrete move.
The Baggies turned down a £10m bid from Leicester City earlier in the transfer window and reports from BBC claim that Tony Pulis is not ready to sell Evans this summer and has rejected another bid of £18m, this time from Manchester City. So should Pep make another move?
A product of the Manchester United youth academy, the Northern Ireland international jumped into the first team in 2006 but spent time on loan till 2008 at two different English clubs. He cemented a place in the starting XI for a couple of years but failed to show enough consistency for the Red Devils to stick with him at the highest level.
This saw him shipped off to West Bromwich Albion, where he was an instant hit, standing as one of the first names on the team sheet. Capable of playing as a left-back as well, Evans is a strong and athletic centre half, tailor made for the English game.
His understanding of the game allows him to intercept any play in front of goal while his vision allows him to pick his man even under immense pressure. He is a decent player with the ball at his feet and will be more than a decent addition to the squad at the Etihad.
Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany and John Stones are the first choice CBs at the club at the moment while Eliaquim Mangala is also an option. Evans’ experience in England will see him climb the pecking order quickly but do you think he is the right man for City?
