Rafa Benitez did not make a memorable return to the top flight in England with Newcastle United as his newly promoted side went down to Tottenham Hotspur at home in the first game of the new campaign. The squad at the club is decent but the Spanish gaffer is looking to add more quality to allow them to compete in a better manner this season.
This has seen them linked with some of the most exciting players in Europe and the player extensively linked with a move to the club recently is Everton star, Aaron Lennon.
The experienced English international spent most of the previous season at the Goodison Park out on the sidelines with an injury and the number of additions Ronald Koeman has made to the squad will push him down the pecking order. He will find first team chances hard to come by and will surely be ready for a move but is he the right man for the Magpies?
The Leeds United product made a name for himself at the highest stage with his performances at the White Hart Lane in his 10-season stay with Tottenham Hotspur till 2015. He joined Everton on a permanent basis in 2015 but in the last couple of years, he failed to establish himself in the first team, thanks to injuries and lack of form.
A right winger by trait, the English international is a pacey customer with decent dribbling skills. He can get past his man with ease but is more adept at hold up play, which allows his team to thrive in the attack. Though not too strong in the air, Lennon is a genuine threat from set-pieces and is a player who, in his prime, could have walked into the best teams in England.
He is now 30 and stands as one of the most experienced wingers in England, having made 327 Premier League appearances, 35 European appearances and 21 international appearances to date.
He is not in the plans for the Three Lions for the upcoming World Cup but is a player who can fight his way back, if given enough game time. Everton will not be able to provide him with the same and making a move to the St James’ a no brainer for the English ace.
The Magpies have decent quality on the wing but they need established stars who can come in and help during crunch times and Lennon could be the perfect fit.
