According to reports, Leicester City are closing in on Sheffield Wednesday star George Hirst as the Foxes have apparently doubled their offer to land the striker after a failed attempt in the first try. The 18-year-old is viewed by many as the next big star in England and Leicester City believe that playing alongside the likes of Jamie Vardy, Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani would make him better.
All the grand schemes and planning that Leicester had plotted after their title winning season got slashed by half after the debacle that the Foxes experienced immediately. However, amidst all the top level changes and lack of consistency haven’t led the Foxes to overlook the importance of looking after the youth setup.
The Foxes have tried to keep their summer arrivals balanced between experience and youth as apart from 32-year-old Eldin Jakupovic and 29-year-old Vicente Iborra, Craig Shakespeare has also brought in 24-year-old Harry Maguire, 20-year-olds Kelechi Iheanacho and George Thomas. Last season, they had got in Demarai Gray who has been performing well for England in the Under 23 side.
Leicester have definitely started their season more positively as they lost by a slim 4-3 margin against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners had to come back twice before scoring two quick goals in the last ten minutes. A brace by Vardy and one by Okazaki should keep Shakespeare in high spirits when they face Brighton & Hove Albion next.
Leicester had earlier tabled a £1 million offer for George Hirst earlier but Sheffield Wednesday value him more than that and the offer was turned down. Reportedly, the Foxes have now doubled their original offer in a bid which also includes a host of add-ons to lure both the club as well as the player.
More popularly known as the son of former England striker David Hirst, George broke into Sheffield Wednesday’s first team squad last season as he was brought on from the bench twice. Although he is yet to open an account in the Championship, his movements and understanding of the game has been hailed by many.
He has already caught the attention of top Premier League clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Everton although Leicester lead the race. George grabbed all the limelight following his displays in England Under-18’s success at the Toulon tournament campaign earlier this summer. He has managed to score four goals in five appearances for the England Under-20s too.
