Watford are searching for a new keeper to provide some competition to Heurelho Gomes who has been a one man army in the Hornets goal. The 36-year-old is still going pretty strong despite his growing age and has exceeded all the expectations at the Vicarage Road.
Gomes is expected to be in that position for at least this season but Marco Silva has been seeking a new option alongside his current keeper. With the increasing competition in the Premier League, an able back-up or an alternative in every position is almost a must.
According to reports, Udinese keeper, Orestis Karnezis might join the Hornets. Silva already has made some blockbuster signings with the likes of Andre Gray and Richarlison and the 32-year-old keeper could follow the suit.
His representative, Vasileios Panagiotakis made it clear that the keeper is ready for a move to the Premier League and has given a hint on his next destination. “The Napoli option is now definitively off the table.
“Karnezis will play in England for one from Watford, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.”
Watford displayed a lot of heart and desire as they fought back to secure a draw against Liverpool. With Silva at the helm of things, the Hornets will have a very good chance this season as the Portuguese gaffer has already shown glimpses of his capability last season.
He was handed the responsibility to steer Hull from the relegation scare and he had almost done the impossible but a series of shambolic performances right at the end denied them from staying up and they dropped down to the Championship.
Silva would be very keen to replicate his performance from the dugout and with Watford investing a large chunk of money, the performance should topple the previous one under Mazzarri.
With both Costel Pantilimon and Gomes in their thirties, Watford’s dire need of a young keeper for the future concluded as they roped in Daniel Bachmann from Stoke City on a free transfer.
Last season Gomes was the saviour for the Hornets on a number of occasions and he is expected to continue his displays having signed a new two year deal with the Hornets recently.
At this time, bringing a goalkeeper could be a luxury for Silva as he needs to provide quality to other departments. Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are also believed to be in the race to land the keeper, especially the Magpies, who are in the dire need of a shot stopper, as Rafa Benitez wants a significant name in the goal for this season.
